40 Days of Prayer and Reflection - Lenten Moments: Be reconciled through Christ

Focusing Scripture: 2Corinthians 5:20-6:2
"So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Theme: Be reconciled through Christ.
What if…. the solicitor on the phone or at the door offered you “peace and forgiveness, no strings attached.” We’d probably hesitate before hanging up or shutting the door—or we might think, “Yeah, right.” The fact is, Jesus is at the door, he’s on the phone, he’s offering us peace and forgiveness. Do we hang up, do we shut the
door?

Reflective Moment
Check the schedule at your parish to see when the Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated. Put it on your family calendar.

Living the Message
Reach out in forgiveness and reconciliation to a family member.

Prayer Moment
Take some quiet moments to examine the areas of your life where you need Jesus’ peace and forgiveness.

40 Days of Prayer and Reflection - Lenten Prayer Petitions

Leader
Jesus, we want to follow your example, but sometimes it’s
not easy. You said you will always be with us, so we ask
you now to be with us during this Lenten season and help
us to grow in faith and action as Christians.
Prayer Petitions
Response: Help us, Lord.

For the times we make fun of others because they
seem different than us—please help us to be
accepting of all people. We pray....

For the times we are selfish with our time and
possessions—please help us to willingly share
what we have with others. We pray....

For the times we argue in our family—please help
us to appreciate our parents, brothers and sisters
in a loving manner. We pray....

For the times when we forget about you Lord,
and think we don’t need you—please help us to
take time to pray and listen for your guidance.
We pray….

For the times we give in to what is wrong because
we’re afraid to say no—please give us the courage
to stand up for what we know is right. We pray....

For the times we are hurt by others, our friends
and family—please give us the grace to forgive as
you do. We pray....

For the times we fail, and feel too tired to go on—
please give us the strength to try again.
We pray....

Leader
Jesus, You are our model of love. Help us to share your
love in our lives through our families, friends and even the
strangers we meet. May our lives be a sign of your love in
our world today. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our
savior and our friend. Amen.

40 Days of Prayer and Reflection - Lenten Moments; Turning back to God

Focusing Scripture: Luke 13:1-9
‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’

Theme: Turning back to God.
We can really make a mess of things sometimes, can’t we? Hurt happens. Feelings of love and harmony and all those good things can be in short supply. Jesus has a solution for us sinners. “Turn back to God.” We need to become more God-focused. This might require forgiveness, being sorry, changing our behavior, willing to love when there is no feeling of love.

Reflective Moment
Find Scripture stories of people who turned away from God but then turned back to God (the prodigal son). How about people you know or have heard about, who were walking away from God but then returned to God? Share or journal about one of your stories.

Living the Message
Ask for forgiveness from someone who you have turned away from.

Prayer Moment
Forgiving God, we are grateful that there is always the opportunity to turn back to you, when we lose our way and drift apart from you, you wait for us to come back to your love. Give us the strength to let go of our pride when we sin, and to turn back to you. Amen.

40 Days of Prayer and Reflection - Lenten Moments; Jesus Knows What Is In Our Hearts

Focusing Scripture: John 2:13-25
"...When he was in Jerusalem during  the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone."

Theme: Jesus knows what is in our hearts.
Do you know anybody who can look right through you, into your
heart? Parents sometimes seem to have this uncanny ability: they can read the honesty (or lack of) on a child’s face or see through the put-on  cheerfulness to the hurt within. Husbands and wives, or best friends have this ability too. Jesus knows us even better than parents, husbands, wives or friends. He knows us inside and out. He knows what is in our hearts.

Reflective Moment
Jesus knows what is in our hearts. How do you feel about that today? Is there anything you need to do to set your heart right with Jesus?

Living the Message
Create a simple prayer symbol—a heart with the words “Jesus, you know what is in my heart.” Place this heart where you will see it regularly.

Prayer Moment
Using the prayer symbols created above, pause during the day to repeat and contemplate this prayer, “Jesus, you know what is in my heart.”

40 Days of Prayer and Reflection - Ash Wednesday Blessing of a Home Cross

Ash Wednesday Blessing of a Home Cross
Many families have a cross or crucifix which hangs on a wall in their home. On Ash Wednesday, the family can gather to bless this special Home Cross. Use this Cross during the days in Lent.

Place the Home Cross on a table.

Pray
We bless this cross this Ash Wednesday to remind
ourselves that we, as family members, are called to die to
our own wants and needs and to be of service to each
other. Let our kissing of this cross give us the courage to
be faithful to our Lenten Journey.

The Cross may be passed to each member to kiss.

On Good Friday place the cross in a position of prominence in the home as a visual reminder of Jesus’ great love for the people of our world.

Wondering What Ash Wednesday Is All About?

Ash Wednesday Reflection - From a Letter to the Corinthians by Saint Clement

Repent

Let us fix our attention on the blood of Christ and recognize how precious it is to God his Father, since it was shed for our salvation and brought the grace of repentance to all the world.

If we review the various ages of history, we will see that in every generation the Lord has offered the opportunity of repentance to any who were willing to turn to him. When Noah preached God’s message of repentance, all who listened to him were saved. Jonah told the Ninevites they were going to be destroyed, but when they repented, their prayers gained God’s forgiveness for their sins, and they were saved, even though they were not of God’s people.

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the ministers of God’s grace have spoken of repentance; indeed, the Master of the whole universe himself spoke of repentance with an oath: As I live, says the Lord, I do not wish the death of the sinner but his repentance. He added this evidence of his goodness: House of Israel, repent of your wickedness. Tell the sons of my people: If their sins should reach from earth to heaven, if they are brighter than scarlet and blacker than sackcloth, you need only turn to me with your whole heart and say, “Father,” and I will listen to you as a holy people.

In other words, God wanted all his beloved ones to have the opportunity to repent and he confirmed this desire by his own almighty will. That is why we should obey his sovereign and glorious will and prayerfully entreat his mercy and kindness. We should be suppliant before him and turn to his compassion, rejecting empty works and quarrelling and jealousy which only lead to death.

Brothers, we should be humble in mind, putting aside all arrogance, pride and foolish anger. Rather, we should act in accordance with the Scriptures, as the Holy Spirit says: The wise man must not glory in his wisdom nor the strong man in his strength nor the rich man in his riches. Rather, let him who glories glory in the Lord by seeking him and doing what is right and just. Recall especially what the Lord Jesus said when he taught gentleness and forbearance. Be merciful, he said, so that you may have mercy shown to you. Forgive, so that you may be forgiven. As you treat others, so you will be treated. As you give, so you will receive. As you judge, so you will be judged. As you are kind to others, so you will be treated kindly. The measure of your giving will be the measure of your receiving. Let these commandments and precepts strengthen us to live in humble obedience to his sacred words. As Scripture asks: Whom shall I look upon with favor except the humble, peaceful man who trembles at my words?

Sharing then in the heritage of so many vast and glorious achievements, let us hasten toward the goal of peace, set before us from the beginning. Let us keep our eyes firmly fixed on the Father and Creator of the whole universe, and hold fast to his splendid and transcendent gifts of peace and all his blessings.

Grant, O Lord,
that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service,
so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils,
we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
– Amen.
