Focusing Scripture: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
“
Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. ”
Theme: Lenten
practices.
Show-offs can be really annoying, can’t they? And we think, “Oh, how
foolish they are.” Of course it’s not possible that we flaunt our good deeds,
is it? No, only other people do that. Well, apparently, the Jesus who knows us
so well also knows that our tendency might be to show off—to make sure everyone
knows how holy and righteous we are. He assures us that this is really a lousy
use of our energy, that quiet devotion and sacrifice are more pleasing to God
than showy demonstrations.
Reflective Moment
Which Lenten practices is your family observing? How are you being
faithful to these practices?
Living the Message
Do a quiet act of kindness for another person today.
Prayer Moment
Lord, may we be steadfast and faithful in our Lenten practice. (You might list some of the things you are doing for Lent and pray for the grace to accomplish the goals you have set for yourself.) Through the grace of your son,
and the power of your Spirit, give us the energy and the perseverance to stick
with our Lenten commitments. Amen.
